Coffee has always been considered the traditional drink in a lot of countries around the world. In the middle east countries, they consider coffee a symbol of generosity and hospitality. The ingredients and the brewing methods may be different from one country to another, but they all agree to the same concept of drinking coffee in their gatherings whether to catch up with their friends or to discuss mutual interests.
Turkish coffee
Turkish coffee is the most famous coffee served in the Middle East. It is known by the word “kahveh”. It is prepared by blending the coffee grounds with water or milk and sugar on low heat, then it’s left to simmer for a couple of minutes until ready. The coffee is usually mixed with spices like cardamom and nutmeg. After they finish drinking the coffee, some people use the grounds left in their cups as a way to see the future, but it’s a superstition to others.
Egyptian coffee
In Egypt, they serve Turkish coffee with the same ingredients. They are also very careful about not leaving the coffee to boil for too long otherwise it will taste like a burned one. The coffee needs to have a layer of foam on the surface to be savored. People serve coffee in places called coffee houses where everyone can enjoy the coffee while talking, watching matches, discussing politics, or listening to songs.
Saudi Arabian coffee
In Saudia Arabia, it is famous by the name “Al-Qahwa”. They usually serve coffee with dates or sweets in all social gatherings and events. Saudi coffee is a bit different in its ingredient as they prepare it using green beans lightly roasted with cardamom, saffron, and creamer. The cups are filled one-third of the way otherwise it will deliver a sign that the host wants everyone to leave when they finish their drink.
Yemeni coffee
In Yemen, it was originally known as “Qahwah” which was then changed into the Dutch’s “koffie” until it became “coffee”. They use light-colored beans. The coffee grounds are mixed with cinnamon, saffron, or green cardamom.
